A gut remodel of the lower level of this beach home was needed when the client’s husband, a retired marine biologist and avid surfer, was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s. The master suite with spa bath/shower wet room, and guest bedroom with full bath were redesigned for a whole new look and for better efficiency of the space to prepare for long term care while aging in place.

Featuring original French doors opening up to a beautiful Hawaiian-like tropical garden on a one third acre lot with ocean views, one of the biggest challenges was to bring in natural light since the house is built into a slope with limited exposures available for windows. Other design highlights include: a custom glass mosaic tile design that evokes the calmness of ocean and water, a recessed trough drain feature along the entire mosaic wall, two shower benches and two ADA compliant grab bars elegantly and discretely integrated into the design, an enlarged master bedroom layout, custom bamboo cabinetry, and colorful textile art from the clients’ travels.
